Development of an intensive sub-internship course for senior nursing students: case study

Abstract
Background: The successful transition from nursing student to nurse is required in terms of competency. The purpose of this study was to develop an intensive sub-internship course which is to increase the competency of senior nursing students and evaluate the nursing students' responses to the course.

Methods: An intensive sub-internship course was designed to improve senior nursing students¡¯ competency. Ninety-four students enrolled in a course and were divided into four teams. Each team participated in a 1-week on campus practice. Data were collected from self-reported questionnaire after a course.

Results: An intensive sub-internship course which comprises high fidelity simulation, procedural task trainer training for 10-core nursing skills, group work for evidence based practice, and drug calculation practice was developed for senior nursing students. Participants were satisfied with the course contents. The course was helpful to improve the nursing skills and learning. There was an increase in the students' confidence in own capability. Of respondents to an open-ended question about satisfactory aspects most of them listed "repetitive nursing skills practice".

Conclusions: An intensive sub-internship course was helpful and satisfactory experience to senior students. This study suggests that intensive sub-internship course is helpful to improve nursing skills, confidence in own capability, and competency.
